In 1987, CFM became involved in a disaster relief work which involved the feeding of several hundred people for several weeks. This work was necessary because a tornado had destroyed dozens of homes and greatly damaged the Glade-Myrick-Powers areas of Jones County. The food we prepared was trucked to the affected areas and served to families clearing/rebuilding and to work crews which had arrived from other places. In 1999, monies were set aside by CFM for the purpose of establishing a special foreign missions project. This was made possible through a one-time, generous contribution. Martin and Karen Arroyo are being funded by CFM to set up a feeding (and evangelism) ministry in Oaxaca, Mexico (southeast of Mexico City) for extremely poor children. We are praying and waiting to see what else the Lord may have for CFM to do as we seek His plans for our future.
Feeding hungry children and adults has always been a big part of what they do. While in Mexico City they were helped by individuals and Rotary Clubs; however, since they began their ministry in Oaxaca they have been supported in their feeding programs by the Christian Food Mission of Laurel, Mississippi. Juxtlahuaca, Oaxaca is a valley located amongst high mountains and is one of Mexico´s poorest regions. Illiteracy, malnutrition, alcoholism, superstition, witchcraft, violence, and government corruption are the chains that have held these people in spiritual bondage for generations. The Mixtecs at one time (before Spanish conquest) were a great nation, known for their intelligence and creativity. Having sold their souls to pagan, occult deities, these once proud and powerful people are now known as some of the poorest and most difficult peoples of Mexico to evangelize. These pressing needs have opened the doors for us to share the light of Christ through helps offered to widows, elderly, physically enabled, single mothers, and others living in extreme poverty through food baskets, building projects, medical teams, clothing distribution, etc. With the support of the Christian Food Mission we are able to feed hungry folks who come to seek medical care at the only hospital in this rural area twice a week. On Tuesdays and Thursdays children who are being monitored for malnutrition, pregnant mothers, and others with diverse medical needs come for their medical care and are served a nutritious, warm meal as they wait. Many have left their mountain homes in the wee hours of the morning and will have to wait many hours before seeing a doctor. These meals are a huge blessing with approximately 100 to 150 people served each time. Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays the meals are taken to more remote villages with the purpose of helping in the fight with malnutrition amongst the many children. Approximately 140 children and mothers receive these meals as well as a spiritual meal presented through song, Bible stories, and play time. Thanks to these meals many lives have been touched with the Gospel and others have now become citizens of the Kingdom of God. In September of 2002 the Arroyos had the privilege to begin a church. “Centro Crisitano Familiar Gracia Abundante” began to meet with just a few in attendance. Now, however, through God´s grace each Sunday 60 to 70 faithful folks gather together to worship through song and the preaching of the Word. “Gracia Abundante” has had the opportunity to reach out through ministries for youth, women, and marriages. Marriage counselling has been an area where the Arroyos have seen tremendous doors of opportunity. Many, many hurting men and women have come seeking healing for their broken marriages and have found even greater healing for their souls through the Gospel of Grace. Each day the Arroyos find greater and more varied ways for sharing the Kingdom, mainly through careful teaching of the Word and trying to show the compassionate hands of Jesus stretched out to the poor and needy. They are thankful to be saved by grace through faith alone and serve their Lord with hearts full of gratitude and joy for what He has done. They want to be faithful to walk in those “good works, which God prepared in advance” (Eph.2:10) and trust Him to be their wisdom, strength, and hope to carry out the immense task of sharing Christ to the Mixtec community of Juxtlahuaca.
This email was received from the Arroyos on September 14, 2009: Dear Robert, Martin told me about your phone conversation the other day. We are very sorry that we have let the time slip by without better communication and we are especially sorry if we have affected in some negative way those who are interested in giving to your ministry. Try as we might, we just canīt seem to keep up with everything as we would like. I have updated information for you and we will try to have pictures within the next few days. On Sundays we serve our Triqui Indian congregation a meal before they have their service. We have about 35 who come regularly. They travel by an open cattle type truck where they have to either stand or sit on the floor. Their trip takes about an hour or a bit longer. One of the elderly couples has to walk an hour before they get to the road where they catch the truck. They are very dear and faithful to the Lord. They seem to enjoy greatly the breakfasts. They lick their plates clean and if some is left over they scrape it into tortillas, wrap them in napkins, and take them with them to eat later. Nothing is ever wasted!! On Mondays and Tuesdays our friend and coworker, Mary Villa Pablo, takes meals to two of our nearby villages. On Monday the elementary and secondary school children of Yucuyi receive a warm afterschool meal and they are joined by 13 small children who are being monitored for malnourishment. We were asked to help assist in improving their nutricional status. About 68 children are fed on those days. On Tuesdays in a village called San Martin Duraznos breakfast is served to another group of children with malnourishment and their mothers and an afterschool meal is served to the elementary and secondary school children for a total of about 75 meals. In both of these villages the Gospel is being shared and several of these villagers now come faithfully to church each Sunday in transportation that the church helps to provide. We also help to pay for the transportation for the Triqui brothers and sisters as well. At the rural hospital here in Juxtlahuace we still serve breakfasts on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Another one of our coworkers, Jorge Flores, is in charge of this ministry. He is aided by several members from our church. Each day they serve between 100 and 120 meals. They always have tracts to distribute and they play our radio programs and Christian music as the people eat. For a time we were not able to continue with the jail ministry for lack of helpers, but, thanks to the Lord, we now have a solid, godly brother to take this ministry on once again. We desire to serve a meal there again once a week along with a Bible study. Lord willing, this will begin within the next few weeks. We continue showing movies on Thursday nights with the projector you gave us. Now with the big shelter we have at our new church site, we can show them even during the rainy season. I donīt know if I have ever told you that one of the dear Christian ladies that has helped prepare our meals for the hospital over the years has been greatly helped by the little financial help we are able to give her for her work. She is a single mother who cares not only for her 2 children but for her elderly parents as well. All this, thanks to the funds you give us. This is how we use the resources you have so faithfully given us. We try our very best to be good stewards of what you give and we are very thankful to see the many ways the Lord has blessed because of these feeding programs. We hope that when you get the pictures you will have an even clearer vision of how the monies are used to bless so many lives. Thank you so very much for your patience with us. In His service, Martin and Karen
PS. Recently we were asked to help serve a meal or meals at a day home that has been opened for elderly people. We would like to help out if possible and are asking the Lord for His guidance.
PSS. Please let us know if you receive this. We have many problems with our internet service and we are always afraid that our emails donīt get to their destinations.
